I heard that Trump Toronto is now under construction. Is this true?
Construction is nearly complete and in fact, the hotel opened on January 31, 2012. The ground breaking event was held in October 2007 (click here for link to ground breaking video) and excavation work began soon after. Completion of the building is expected in early 2013. The hotel suites are deemed to be commercial property. What that means to you as an owner is that there are intrinsic tax benefits associated with owning a commercial property. For example, the furnishings and fixtures depreciate at an accelerated rate compared to the building structure, which depreciates at a slower rate.
