Before entering the lobby of Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto®, the high standard of grandeur that is seen throughout the residences and hotel condominiums can be found in a magnificent, one-of-a-kind mosaic that sits in the building’s porte-cochere (Click here to book book a tour of Trump® Toronto and experience it in-person).
Created by Stephen Andrews, a well-respected Toronto-based artist, the mosaic titled “A small piece of something larger” is 13.5 feet tall and 69 feet long. This large-scale piece is the product of stitching a number of original photos together, making one cohesive image. It depicts a crowd engaging in common, everyday behaviour.
“The photos were taken before a performance. People are just doing what people do: chatting, laughing and goofing around,” Andrews said.
Up close the image is abstract, however, from a distance it begins to resolve and the viewer can better understand its message.
“Here, we have many small tiles making up the image of an individual who in turn is just one small piece making up the larger audience … once the piece comes into focus then perhaps [the viewer] will see that they are the subject of the piece.”
Commissioned by Trump® Toronto this mosaic consists of approximately 500,000 tiles made of ceramic, smalti glass, and antique gold. Each ceramic tile was handmade; custom glazed and meant to appear similar to the oil glazes Andrew’s uses in his paintings. In total, $10,000 worth of gold tiles is within the mosaic and gives the piece flecks of glitter and shine.
After one year, 15 artisans from Mosaika Art and Design, a Montreal-based mosaic design and manufacturing company, and Andrews completed the crowd scene. It was installed on the wall of the Trump® Toronto porte-cochere in September 2011.
In the past, Andrews explored the dynamic of the micro and the macro through a series of crowd scenes titled “hoi polloi” which is Greek for “the masses.” However, this commission was his first mosaic piece.
“I must say, the entire making of this piece has been a dream come true.”
