John Szabo, Canada’s first Master Sommelier who earned the title from the Court of Master Sommeliers in London, England in 2004, is a bright light in this country’s vibrant wine community. Szabo is a well-known figure who writes extensively about wine for a wide variety of publications, also appearing on radio to discuss the craft, and serves as Master Sommelier and Wine Director for STOCK™ Restaurant.
In building the wine menu for STOCK™, Szabo used every facet of his training and knowledge of the world’s best champagnes to find the perfect selections, and brought them to Toronto for the city’s enjoyment. Each of the champagnes Szabo found offers its own unique style and characteristics, including an exceptional range of top brands such as Ace of Spades Brut or Rosé, 1998 King Brut Vintage, 2004 Cristal Brut, Louis Roederer and 1997 Champagne Salon, Blanc de Blanc Clos de Mesnil. These reside among limited production, hand-crafted grower Champagnes from the likes of André Clouet, Cedris Bouchard and Guy Charlemagne.
As for why champagne holds such an important place on his wine list, Szabo says “I love Champagne, a feeling I’d like to share with as many people as possible.”

Marlene Dietrich wrote that she loved Champagne because ‘it gives the impression that it is a Sunday and that the best days will soon be upon us.’ In “Ninotchka,” Greta Garbo plays a Russian girl who discovers Champagne when visiting Paris, and among many other film stars, Audrey Hepburn, Jeanne Moreau, Marilyn Monroe and Juliette Binoche all loved Champagne, while Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier celebrated it in songs. Author, statesman and man of taste Sir Winston Churchill wrote that “Champagne should be a daily delight for those who knew the true meaning of life.”
